Service-Learning Fair!

Congratulations to all our Upper Division students on an incredibly successful Service-Learning Fair this past Thursday!  It was great to see students from grades 10, 11, and 12 learning about possible pre-approved service learning projects from not only their peers, but also from CCVA community partners like Emerson Nunez from Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy.  If you happened to miss the fair and want more information about all the great opportunities available to you, feel free to stop by the CCVA office in the Counseling and Guidance Suite (Olshan Lobby) and we'd be happy to talk things through with you!

"Don't Stifle Conflict in the Classroom" - Alfie Kohn

A great article about the value of conflict in classrooms and other learning environments. Using conflict to teach deeper thinking is an important tool in classrooms, and it is only when conflict turns to competition do things turn sour.  An important read for anyone engaged in service-learning programs connected to learning, tutoring, or teaching!

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center Park Grand Opening!

Come join one of the Service-Learning Team's oldest partnering sites, Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) as they host a grand opening for their new park!

Time: September 13th, 8:30am-10:30am (Park Open all day until 8:30pm)

Where: Kingsbridge Heights Community Center
             3101 Kingsbridge Terrace, Bronx
             New York, 10463

A few months ago, with the help of community and volunteer support, KHCC was able to transform an old parking lot into a beautiful new community park where kids and adults alike can enjoy the gorgeous summer weather. Not only does the park provide a new place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, but it also gives the KHCC family the opportunity to continue building food literacy knowledge and ensuring access to affordable fresh produce.

KHCC kindly asks anyone interested in attending to bring school supplies to donate to their school-age community members. Items such as notebooks, backpacks, pencils, diapers, and more will be greatly appreciated.
